CHARACTER NAME: Knight Industries Two Thousand
SERIES: Knight Rider (classic)
CHRONOLOGY: After the "Hearts of Stone" episode.
CLASS: Hero
BACKGROUND:
Knight Rider takes place during the 80's in a world not too different from our own, the main difference being more advanced technology (such as microprocessors, lasers, etc). However, this technology is mostly restricted to plot devises and does not affect the setting in general.
Designed by Wilton Knight and Charles Graiman for the Foundation of Law and Government, a subdivision of Knight Industries created to maintain peace and fight crime, the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT) was the final result of FLAG's attempts to develop an artificial intelligence. Unlike their first prototype, the Knight Industries Roving Robot (KARR), which had been programmed to prioritize self-preservation, KITT was programmed to protect human life; once ready, KITT was installed into a modified Pontiac Trans Am.
Unfortunately, KITT ended up being Wilton Knight's last project, as he died shortly after choosing a driver for him - Michael Long, a cop whom FLAG had rescued when he was shot and left for dead in the dessert while investigating a case, and to whom they had given the new identity of Michael Knight. With Wilton dead, FLAG was taken over by a friend and associate, Devon Miles.
Though he initially turned down FLAG's offer, Michael nevertheless took KITT along as he attempted to find out the identities of the people who has tried to kill him, discovering that KITT had a personality and could talk. During the mission, Michael was captured and sent to jail, while KITT was taken to a warehouse to be dismantled; due to the material of his frame he remained intact and was able to break Michael out of jail (literally - he crashed through a wall) later that night, just in time to arrest everyone involved in the shooting. Now more willing to work with KITT, and realizing that Wilton was right when he said that single man could make a difference, Michael accepted to become his driver.
Michael then dedicated himself to completing missions given to him by Devon, mostly involving either criminals that had avoided the efforts of conventional law enforcement or people who couldn't get help in another way, using KITT as a method of transport, communication with FLAG and general support; for example, keeping surveillance while Michael did something else, chasing criminals, or simply acting as a distraction. Michael also met Bonnie, KITT's mechanic and mother figure, who often disagreed with him as she considered that he treated KITT too roughly.
During one of their missions, Michael and KITT were sent to secure one of FLAG's warehouses, arriving in the middle of a break-in, during which the thieves escaped in a car identical to KITT. Devon explained that KARR, rather than being destroyed as Wilton had originally ordered, had been stored, and that the thieves had stumbled upon and reactived him by accident. Using KARR to commit crimes, the thieves then kidnapped Bonnie so that she would repair him, however, this caused a discussion between them, giving Michael and KITT enough time to save her. With Bonnie safe, one of the thieves dead and the other left behind by KARR, Michael and KITT went after KARR; overriding KITT's programming, Michael set him on a collision course with KARR, causing KARR to change his course and fall off a cliff, presumably destroyed for good.
KITT's latest change before his pull point was the addition of an improved dashboard, changing the blinking red screen of his voice synthesizer for a set of bars similar to an equalizer.
PERSONALITY:
As far as personality goes, KITT is sarcastic, serious and focused, usually acting as a counterpart for the more relaxed and spontaneous Michael.
Being an AI, his behavior is also heavily influenced by his programming - he was designed to protect human life at all costs and provide help to his driver, and he can't act against that unless manually overridden by someone with access to his controls. And though Michael, Devon and Bonnie treat him like a teammate and friend rather than just a machine, it's obvious than KITT sees himself as little more than the AI he is (and incredibly advanced AI, of course, but still an AI); anytime that someone suggests that he may be showing an emotional response, KITT points out that feelings are not part of his programming.
Still, what KITT thinks is not necessarily the truth. In fact, trough the series he shows a complex, if subtle, variety of emotions; for example, suffering a trauma after being thrown into acid and having to be rebuilt, but doing his best to dissimulate his fear to avoid worrying Michael. Other clear examples would be vanity and pride, which he usually explains as simply stating the facts - considering himself the best doesn't count if he is the best, and it's only logical that he would dislike things that could compromise him, such as changes to his exterior... even if such changes consist of getting star stickers glued on. Or a different paint job.
Unfortunately, all of this means that KITT is rather clumsy when it comes to social interactions outside of work or his immediate acquaintances, and sometimes even then. He doesn't seem to understand, or care, that not everyone is comfortable with an intelligent, talking car. Likewise, he has the same trouble with most human behavior; he may have more than enough theoretical knowledge about it to understand it, but that doesn't mean he finds it any less illogical. Overall, KITT's main problem would be that he lacks both a good sense of tact and the desire to get it.
Besides Michael, Bonnie is definitely the closest person to him, and his second most important relationship. She's not only his mechanic, but she's also his mother figure; she knows him at a level that not even Michael does, that of his internal workings, and she cares for him accordingly.
POWER:
* Shape-shifting (non canon) :
As he will arrive as a human, KITT will gain the ability to turn back into his car form. However, he won't be able to change by himself - he will need the explicit orders of another person to do so.
* Modified car body (canon):
As a car, KITT is a modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am. His frame is made of a material known as Molecular Bonded Shell, making him capable of withstanding up to 111.5 tons of pressure and 426 °C.
Internally, KITT has a voice synthesizer allowing him to speak, which can be modified to give him a different voice or to upload different languages and accents. He also has a display screen installed into his dashboard (not unlike that of a TV or computer), and a red scan bar on the outside of the car, used by him to "see".
It's important to note that he also has a Manual Override setting, giving his driver complete control of all his systems except voice, and a Computer Override one, to shut down his AI.
FINAL NOTES:
I'm not sure if KITT's abilities count as an umbrella - I listed only the ones I thought would fit, and so those are the ones he'll have. If there is some problem with that, I'll change it.
